At the end of October, Friends will fill up the Festival  Pavilion Pier at Fort Mason for the 54th Big Book Sale, an  iconic San Francisco tradition. Members will kick off the  sale on October 30th at the Member Preview Sale  and Reception, from 4-8PM. The sale will continue  from the 31st, Halloween, through November 4th. On the last  day, the 4th, all books will be just $1. Don’t  fret about book selection! All sections will be restocked  daily with new and exciting finds; there will be no shortage  of great titles. The multi-day event attracts people from  all over the Bay Area and beyond. Mike Pincus, a book  enthusiast who comes to the sale every year, donates his  home library collection before the sale, and then  replenishes his shelves with new books he buys. It’s  because of our supporters like Mike that we are able to  support the superior San Francisco Public Library and  make an exceptional difference! We can’t wait to see  you at the Big Book Sale this fall!

Transgender Film Festival

When: November 9-11, 2018

Where: Roxie Theater

San Francisco, CA

Founded in 1997 and originally named Tranny Fest, SFTFF was North America’s first transgender film festival. We organized our first festival for the same reason so many other marginalized communities have organized film festivals: the absence of authentic representations of our lives and experiences in the mainstream commercial media. Originally a biennial event, SFTFF screened films and videos by transgender and gender variant media artists whose work challenged stereotypes. We primarily served filmmakers with extremely limited access to venues. After five biennual festivals, overwhelming audience demand led our organizers to begin staging the Festival as an annual event in 2005.

Dickens Christmas Fair

When: November 17 – December 23, 2018 (Weekends)

Where: Cow Palace Exhibition Halls

San Francisco, CA

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair is a one-of-a-kind holiday adventure into Victorian London –  an elaborate party with hundreds of costumed players performing and interacting with patrons in over 120,000 square feet of theatrically-lit music halls, pubs, dance floors, and Christmas shops. It’s a twilight evening in Charles Dickens’ London Town – a city of winding lanes filled with colorful characters from both literature and history. Enticing aromas of roasted chestnuts and hearty foods fill the air. Cries of street vendors hawking their wares ring out above the bustling crowd. Dozens of lamplit shops are filled to overflowing with Christmas gifts. The Dickens Christmas Fair is a treasured Bay Area tradition since 1970 and a splendid way to celebrate the holidays.
